Silian Rail is a 6-year-old instrumental band from Oakland, CA, by way of North
Carolina. Long-lost and then serendipitously reunited friends Robin Landy (guitar) and
Eric Kuhn (drums, guitar, keyboards) play a unique form of instrumental music that is
equally charged with raw emotional energy and technical craftsmanship; both
experimental and familiar. On 5/3/2012, the band released a new full length record,
each/other, on Side With Us Records (The Velvet Teen, Worker Bee), as well as an EP,
every/one, featuring an all start cast of Bay Area collaborators. In addition, Lynne Angel
(from San Francisco band Tartufi) has been added to the band's already highly dynamic
live show, rounding out their epic new compositions. For a band that formed slowly and by pure chance, Silian Rail has done a lot thus
far?released two critically acclaimed full lengths, an acoustic EP, multiple split releases
and compilation tracks; composed and performed several short film scores; and toured
the country extensively. 2012's each/other is their most notable evolution thus far, using
the full possibilities of the studio and a diverse range of instrumentation to highlight
increasingly broad dynamics and an eclectic compositional range. While retaining the
core of an intimate dialogue between melodically dense, spidery open-tuned guitar work
and energetic, criss-crossed drumming, the new record expands to allow flourishes
ranging from melancholic piano to fierce walls of junk percussion and droning noisy viola
to ambient washes of harmonium and strings. Collages of found-sound samples hint at
some of the album's inspiring forces and the band?s general love for and affinity with the
unique visionary capacity of people diagnosed with various forms of mental illness.
(Further inspiration was found in sources ranging from Deleuze and Guatari to Occupy
Oakland to the joys and challenges of friendship and collaborative art). Crucially aided
by the engineering and co-production of Robert Cheek (Tera Melos, By Sunlight, Two
Sheds), each/other creates a unique sonic world that is both inviting and continually
surprising, as gentle and reflective as it is fierce and experimental. Additionally, the band is releasing a lo-fi, self-record EP, every/one, created in
collaboration with a wide range of talented friends and peers? Thao Nguyen, Colleen
Johnson (Upside Drown), Lewis Patzner (Judgement Day), Andrew Maguire (Thao and
Mirah, DRMS) and Winston Goertz-Giffen (Saything). In working more fully
collaboratively both within the core duo of the band, and with the broader community
which they feel blessed to call home, the band has felt refreshed, challenged and inspired
to expand their notion of what it means to be a band both musically, and more broadly as
a communal endeavor. "To reach, not the point where one no longer says I, but the point where it is no longer of
any importance whether one says I. We are no longer ourselves. Each will know his own.
We have been aided, inspired, multiplied." -- Deleuze and Guattari "The most beautiful thing is to live on the edges, at the limit of her/his own power of being
affected." -Gilles Deleuze
